Joint Diploma in Physics & Chemistry

The Politecnico di Milano (PoliMi), ENS de Lyon and the university Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL) have partnered to offer their students a dual-diploma Master’s degree in Physics/Chemistry and Engineering.
This international training with the most prestigious engineering school in Italy is a result of an original combination of fundamental research and top engineering in the areas of Physics, Photonics, Chemistry, Nanotechnology and Material Engineering.

Its double curriculum over three years leads to the acquisition of two Master’s degrees, which features:
  • Experimental and theoretical skills
  • Training in research through research
  • Preparation for the engineering of materials and nanotechnology, engineering or in engineering physics

This program also prepares students for an academic or industrial career.

Who is eligible for this program?

Conditions for Admission
  • Holders of a university degree in France or abroad, or an equivalent course.
  • Required language level: B2 in English and B2 in French.
  • Training is delivered in English at the PoliMI and in French and English at the ENS of Lyon/UCBL.

Application dates

PoliMi Students :
  1. Pre-selection by the Politecnico di Milano following the procedure described here: Call and applicationn
    This selection does not guarantee acceptance for the double-degree program at the ENS de Lyon/UCBL.
  2. The student candidate will then apply for the Master’s course at ENS de Lyon/UCBL according to the calendar and following procedures: Pursuing a Master's
The final decision will be taken by all the academic coordinators of the program.

ENS de Lyon / UCBL students:
  1. Interview with the educational team from the Master’s program in Material Sciences. Approval will be formalized by a letter of recommendation to include in the PoliMi application. 

    Contact the appropriate Department Director to include your application in your study plan.
    This selection does not guarantee acceptance to the double degree program at PoliMi.
  2. The student pre-selected by the person in charge of the Master’s candidates will then be accepted on the Master’s course at PoliMi according to the calendar and following procedures: How to apply for double degrees
The final decision will be taken by all the academic coordinators of the program.

Diplomas obtained

Double curriculum over three years leading to the acquisition of two Master’s degrees:
  • At the ENS de Lyon / UCBL: Master’s in Physics & Chemistry
  • At PoliMI : “Laurea Magistrale” in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology / Ingegneria dei Materiali e delle Nanotecnologie,
    or
    “Laurea Magistrale” in Engineering of Physics / Ingegneria Fisica

To obtain the Master’s degree from ENS de Lyon/UCBL within the framework of the double-degree program with PoliMi: 120 ECTS credits of which 30 credits out of the 90 credits obtained have been validated at PoliMi.
To obtain the Master’s degree from PoliMi within the framework of the double-degree program with ENS de Lyon/UCBL: 120 ECTS credits of which 30 credits out of the 90 credits obtained have been validated at ENS de Lyon.

Choice of courses in accordance with the curriculum of the Master’s:In parallel with the «Laurea Magistrale», students may also apply for the collaborative program Alta Scuola Politecnica organized by the Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino and industrial partners.

Financial help

Students pay tuition only in their establishment of origin during the 3 years of training.

    Students with a foreign nationality can apply for a Master’s degree with an excellence award grant from ENS de Lyon and its partners: Grants and scholarships
  • ENS de Lyon / UCBL Students
    Students can qualify for international mobility aid from the ENS de Lyon.
